This Derbyshire longhouse, in the heart of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre country, was built by George Eyre in 1873 and is now the lovely home of Vivienne and Philip Taylor. After a long career in the hospitality industry, they purchased Underleigh House in 1999 and are more than happy to continue to share it all with their outdoor-loving guests who appreciate their creature comforts. A genuine welcome and (if required) advice on what to see and where to go, is always on offer. As soon as you enter the stone-flagged breakfast room, with its cosy atmosphere, original beams and communal table, you sense that this is a place where you can relax and enjoy traditional English hospitality. Evident pride reflected in Underleigh’s breakfast with its plethora of homemade and local produce. With its comfortable, homely and country house style, the guest lounge offers a spacious area in which to relax, take tea, study maps or, in winter, just to toast your toes in front of the log fire. In warmer seasons, tables and chairs scattered about the colourful garden might serve a similar purpose. The en suite bedrooms - several with stunning views – are named after local hamlets. They are charmingly decorated and well equipped (showing great attention to detail) with three of them having their own sitting rooms for extra privacy. At the end of an exhausting day’s walking or sight-seeing, there are excellent eateries in the area including a traditional English pub within a 10-15 minute walk from Underleigh and a ‘fine dining’ experience even closer!
