Borde Hill Garden

Borde Hill Garden

Borde Hill is a Grade II* listed English Heritage Garden set within 200 acres of woodland and parkland, with magnificent views across the Ouse Valley viaduct. Referred to by The Daily Telegraph as ‘planted with passion’ and by Country Life as ‘one of the country’s truly great gardens’. It was created by Colonel Stephenson Robert Clarke from seeds gathered by the Great Plant Hunters of the early 1900’s.

Borde Hill is renowned for its astonishing collection of unusual trees and shrubs, and the Garden is set as distinct ‘rooms’, each with its own unique style and character. In the last 30 years many areas have been greatly enhanced and restored including the sub-tropical Round Dell, the sophisticated Rose Garden and romantic Italian Garden.

An abundance of spring magnolias, camellias and rhododendrons give way to exuberant summer borders of roses and herbaceous plants followed by mellow autumn colour.

Events throughout the season include horticultural talks, music, outdoor theatre, sculpture and family trails during the school holidays. With two cafes serving homemade food, a restaurant in the Good Food Guide, picnic areas and an Adventure Playground, Borde Hill is the perfect place for everyone to enjoy a great day out.

Group Visits

Ideally located near to a number of other beautiful gardens, Borde Hill is the perfect destination for groups touring the Sussex counties and for local groups looking for a memorable day out.

We have something to offer groups every day during the open season, from talks and tours of the 17-acre formal Garden, to a varied event programme. Join our Head Gardener or one of our expert guides for a tour to find out about the history of the Garden and what it takes to maintain this oasis of tranquillity. Designed as a series of outdoor ‘rooms’, each has its own distinctive character, with planting schemes which add variety, colour and interest throughout the seasons.

Enhance your visit with a buffet lunch or afternoon tea tailored to your group’s requirements and served inside a dedicated marquee, with take-away options also available, or dine at the award-winning Jeremy’s Restaurant, located in the grounds of Borde Hill and featured in Good Food Guide 2018.
