National Trust Standen

National Trust Standen

Designed in the 1890s by Philip Webb for the Beale family, Standen was a rural retreat and is one of the finest examples of Arts & Crafts workmanship in the country with interiors by William Morris. Inside the house, which is dressed for a weekend stay in 1925, a warm and welcoming atmosphere awaits you. The hillside garden, recently restored to its 1920s glory, holds an award-winning plant collection with year-round seasonal interest. A place of tranquillity and calm, the garden has uninterrupted views across to Weir Wood reservoir and Ashdown Forest.

On the wider estate, footpaths lead out into the woodlands, Ashdown Forest and wider High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Over 80 acres of ancient meadow and woodland with an abundance of wildlife all year round. Plenty of footpaths, some circular, make it easy to get around. Self-guided walks available from Reception.

Changing exhibitions and installations throughout the year, with cooking demonstrations in the winter using recipes from the Beales’ time.

Please visit in-line with current restrictions, and visit their website before visiting to ensure they are open.
